#HalloweenSpotted: SATANIC HISPANICS (2022) on SHUDDER

Satanic Hispanics is a 2022 horror/comedy anthology film consisting of five short films from leading Latin filmmakers in the horror genre that spotlight Hispanic talent both in front and behind the camera. The film was released by Dread, a sub-division of Epic Pictures, in select US theaters on September 14, 2023 and began streaming on Shudder on March 8, 2024.

SYNOPSIS: When police raid a house in El Paso, they find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He's known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he's encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. Stories about Latin American legends.

Directed by Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Demián Rugna (Terrified), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) and Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project). Written by Alejandro Mendez, Demian Rugna, Adam Cesare and Lino K. Villa. The movie stars Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite), Greg Gunberg (Star Wars IX), Jacob Vargas (Sons of Anarchy), Hemky Madera (Weeds), Patricia Velasquez (The Mummy), Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Demian Salomon, Luis Machin and Ari Allegos.

"This movie is very special for us," said Brugués. "The first all-Latino horror anthology, made by some of the best horror directors representing us from all corners of Latin America, and focused on telling our stories. We couldn't be happier having Iconic Events joining us in unleashing our Latino mayhem on you during Hispanic Heritage month."

Jack-O's Review! Spoilers in my short review below:

Missed this last year, just watched it on Shudder. Loved the ending monster effects in the wraparound. #HalloweenSpotted: The second segment is my favorite, it's about a vampire trying to get home on Halloween night before the sun comes up. Other stories I didn't understand or like as much involve Rubik's Cubes, shape-shifting sorcerers and a powerful phallic. Two segments are comedic and 2 are more serious. ★★★ Good

More Reviews:

"Satanic Hispanics is a near-perfect anthology. With so many different tones and themes, it also tells an astounding wrap-around that holds it all together. From me? It gets a resounding grito, and hope that we get more anthologies like this one. Satanic Hispanics is here to showcase exactly why Latinos deserve more opportunities to tell more horror stories and knock it out of the park." 8.5 out of 10, read more at ButWhyTho.net

"Many anthologies leave you with at least one segment that wasn't quite as good as the others, but there are simply no missteps in this one. Each story was fully realized and expertly crafted. Satanic Hispanics is not only a showcase of skill, horror and carnage but also a playground for these directors to have fun scaring the shit out of us and making us laugh." 90% DownrightCreepy.com

"With a wrap-up which builds on everything that has gone before and plays out in classic Western style whilst retaining the horror element, Satanic Hispanics delivers the kind of punch rarely found in composite films. It's spirited and entertaining throughout, and genre fans will love it." ★★★★, EyeForFilm.co.uk

"Satanic Hispanics shuffles back and forth between the serious and the humorous. Pacing is often an issue with horror anthologies; I found it to be fine here and can recommend the film strongly for fans of fear-fare portmanteaus." HorrorFuel.com

" …clearly you are expecting a spectrum of fun and fear and that's exactly what you get. Hispanics has no qualms with making fun of the Hispanic culture and horror which adds tons of appeal to the film. Runga's feature was my favorite of the lot but I really had no issues with any." HMUncut.com

"It's genuinely scary when it needs to be and packed wall-to-wall with goofy gags. It's a horror anthology that's got a little something for everybody, especially those special someone's that get a kick out of seeing demonic entities on a path of destruction -or- vampires on the run from goofball cops -or- blood-drinking brujas -or- well, to be honest," 90^% NOFSPodcast.com

"Anthology films have to achieve a balance between their stories – too much comedy and each segment starts to feel similar, too much outright horror and the overall feel is too heavy. Satanic Hispanics, while leaning somewhat towards the more comic side just about gets this right. The wraparound set in the police station offers plenty of moments for the film to poke fun at itself…" ★★★½, ScaredSheepless.wordpress.com

"...Satanic Hispanics is a fun film that doesn't feel like it runs for a little under two hours. That length gives each of the filmmakers the time they need to tell their story, but without enough time for padding. It's also good to see Mendez behind the camera again for the first time in six years, and the first really good thing he's done since Big Ass Spider." ★★★★, VoicesFromTheBalcony.com
