Troll KillCount:
Ernest Scared Stupid is a 1991 American comedy horror film directed by John Cherry and starring Jim Varney. It is the fifth film to feature the character Ernest P. Worrell. It was shot in Nashville, Tennessee like its predecessors Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam, Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, and Ernest Goes to Jail. Out of all nine "Ernest" films, this one is the most popular.
SYNOPSIS: Ernest unwittingly unleashes an ugly evil troll that plots to transform children into wooden dolls in the town of Briarville, Missouri on Halloween night. Although the story took place on Halloween, the crew was unable to simulate autumn foliage or obtain pumpkins out of season (the film was shot in May of 1991).
The opening credits feature a montage of clips from various horror and science fiction films, including Nosferatu (1922), White Zombie (1932), Phantom from Space (1953), The Brain from Planet Arous (1957), The Screaming Skull (1958), Missile to the Moon (1958), The Hideous Sun Demon (1958), The Giant Gila Monster (1959), The Killer Shrews (1959), Battle Beyond the Sun (1959), and The Little Shop of Horrors (1960):A fan made this R-rated opening credits edit featuring gorey scenes from more modern horror films like Dead Alive (1992), Hellraiser (1987), The Thing (1982), with appearances by Pennywise from It (1990) and Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs (1991):
RECEPTION/REVIEWS: On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a score of 17% based on 6 reviews. The horror blog A Boos/Booze Situation compared the film to Hocus Pocus which also received a poor box office showing but was cemented as a cult classic. In addition, the blog praised the scene in which a girl discovers the troll in her bed, claiming that it has a strong reputation for terrifying young viewers. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert reviewed the film on their movie review show “Siskel & Ebert At the Movies”. Both of them gave thumbs down, calling it a film with Jim Varney “mugging his way through a dumb script.” Ken Hanke of the Mountain Xpress (Asheville, North Carolina) wrote the film was “not good”, but that it was “kind of likable”.
Jack-O's Review: Ernest Scared Stupid is one of my childhood favorite films and I was surprised how much I still enjoyed rewatching it this year as an adult. I give it 3 out of 4 plastic pumpkin head scarecrows, good. Plastic pumpkins were used because it was out of season during filming and they couldn't find real pumpkins:Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert At The Movies Review:

BOX OFFICE RELEASE: Due to its modest gross of $14,143,280 at the U.S. box office, Disney opted not to continue the franchise, making this the fourth and final Ernest film to be released under the Disney label Touchstone Pictures. All future Ernest films were independently produced, and following the financial failure of Ernest Rides Again, the films shifted to a straight-to-video market.
VHS/DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASE: The film was released on VHS by Touchstone Home Video on August 15, 1992. The first DVD release from Touchstone Home Entertainment was on September 3, 2002. Mill Creek Entertainment re-released it on DVD on January 18, 2011, as part of the two-disc set Ernest Triple Feature along with Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Goes to Jail. Its third re-release was on May 10, 2011, as an individual film. Mill Creek Entertainment released on Blu-ray on August 23, 2011.
